Microchanneling Aftercare — Do's and Don'ts After Your Lancaster PA Treatment

You just left your microchanneling session at Alesca Aesthetics in Lancaster, PA. The next 72 hours matter more than most clients realize — small choices can maximize collagen response or trigger complications like breakouts, hyperpigmentation, or infection.

Here's the exact aftercare protocol I give every microchanneling client, in order.

The first 4 hours — critical window

Nothing on your face. No cleanser, no moisturizer, no makeup, no sunscreen, no serum. Not even the post-care serum we provided at your appointment.

Why: microchannels stay open 4-6 hours after treatment. Anything you apply enters directly into the deeper layers of skin — good if it's a clinical-grade serum designed for it, potentially problematic if it's your regular moisturizer with fragrance, preservatives, or actives.

Don't touch your face. No leaning on your hand. No scratching an itch. No adjusting glasses if avoidable. Your hands carry bacteria — you don't want bacteria in the channels.

Stay out of direct sun. No sitting on the porch. If you have to be outside, wear a wide-brimmed hat + sunglasses. UV on fresh microchannels = higher hyperpigmentation risk.

Stay in a clean environment. Skip the gym. Skip yard work. Skip anywhere dusty. Airborne particles + open channels don't mix.

Hours 4-24

Apply your post-care serum — provided at your Alesca appointment. Follow the instructions on the bottle exactly. Usually a growth-factor or hyaluronic acid serum designed to enhance collagen response.

Cool water rinse only. If your skin feels tight, splash cool (not cold, not warm) water on your face 2-3 times. Pat dry with a clean towel.

Skip these products: - Retinoids / retinol - Vitamin C serums - Glycolic, salicylic, or lactic acid - Any exfoliating scrub - Fragranced products - Heavy moisturizer

Do: - Cool water rinse - Post-care serum - Gentle mineral SPF 30+ if you MUST go outside (zinc oxide preferred)

Avoid: - Alcohol (dehydrates skin, delays healing) - Sweating (workouts, sauna, steam) - Hot showers on face - Air travel if possible (cabin pressure is dehydrating)

Days 1-3

Your skin will feel: - Slightly pink to red (normal — resolves 24-48 hours) - Slightly tight (normal — like mild sunburn feel) - Bumpy or gritty (normal — this is the microchannel healing response) - Warm to touch (normal — heightened blood flow)

Not normal (call Alesca if you see these): - Pus or oozing at channel sites - Fever - Expanding redness beyond the treatment area - Severe swelling - Blisters

Products to use days 1-3

Simplify aggressively. Fewer products = less irritation.

Morning: 1. Cool water rinse (skip cleanser day 1, optional gentle cleanser day 2+) 2. Post-care serum 3. Gentle unfragranced moisturizer (Cerave, LaRoche-Posay Toleriane, Vanicream) 4. Mineral SPF 30+ (Elta MD Physical, Cerave Mineral, LaRoche-Posay Mineral)

Evening: 1. Gentle cleanser (Cerave Hydrating, Vanicream) 2. Post-care serum (if provided for evening use) 3. Same gentle moisturizer as morning

Do not layer on additional serums, actives, oils, or masks day 1-3.

Days 3-5

Skin may: - Flake or peel lightly — do NOT pick or exfoliate. Let it fall off naturally. - Break out slightly — some clients get 3-5 small pimples days 3-5 as pores clear. Resolves within a week. Do not pop. - Feel dry — moisturize more frequently (3-4x daily if needed).

Can resume around day 3-5: - Regular gentle cleanser - Hyaluronic acid serum - Peptide serum (if you use one) - Light-weight vitamin C serum (test tolerance first — some skin still sensitive)

Still avoid until day 7: - Retinoids - AHA/BHA exfoliants - Physical scrubs - Waxing on treatment area - Chemical peels - Any laser treatments

Days 5-7

Most clients back to normal appearance. Some observations:

  • Skin looks noticeably brighter — this is the "microchanneling glow" that lasts 2-4 weeks
  • Pore appearance improved — early hint of results, will build over next 2-3 weeks
  • Fine lines slightly softer — collagen production is peaking

Day 7+ you can resume: - Retinoids (start slowly, every other night for first week back) - AHA/BHA toners - Vitamin C at full strength - Physical exfoliation (once weekly max)

Weeks 2-4 — the collagen results window

Real results build over 4-6 weeks. Here's what happens invisibly:

  • Week 1: Superficial skin resurfacing complete
  • Week 2: Collagen production ramping up
  • Week 3: New collagen laying down under skin
  • Week 4: Skin firmness noticeably improved
  • Week 6: Peak results visible

Do NOT judge your microchanneling results before week 4. Some clients get discouraged at day 10 thinking "that was expensive for a mild glow." Wait. The real transformation is week 3-6.

When to schedule your next session

For best results:

  • Single-session tester: 4-6 weeks after first for second session
  • 4-session package: Space 4-6 weeks apart (so 4 sessions = ~5 months total)
  • Maintenance after series: 1 session every 3-4 months

Common questions

Can I wear makeup the day after? Yes, from day 2+ (24 hours after treatment). Use clean brushes.

Can I use my Clarisonic/spin brush? Not for 7 days. Then resume normally.

Can I get facials/peels/lasers in between microchanneling? Wait 2 weeks between microchanneling and any other treatment.

Can I use my LED mask? Yes — LED accelerates healing. Can start day 1 evening after treatment.

Can I go to the pool/lake/ocean? Not for 3 days (bacteria + chlorine irritation).

Can I get a spray tan? Wait 5-7 days. Spray tan solution on healing microchannels can cause uneven color.

Can I get lip filler or Botox? Wait 2 weeks between microchanneling and injectables (either direction).

Will microchanneling break me out? Some clients get mild post-treatment breakouts days 3-5. Resolves within a week. Do not pop.

How often can I do microchanneling long-term? Every 4-6 weeks during initial series (3-4 sessions), then every 3-4 months for maintenance. Can be done indefinitely — many clients continue for years.
