Russian technique vs traditional — the difference in one paragraph
Traditional lip filler: Product injected horizontally along the lip body. Creates all-around plump, pillowy lips. Enhances existing shape.
Russian technique: Product injected vertically from the wet-dry border upward toward the top of the lip. Creates height, distinct definition, and a heart-shaped "flat wall" front view with visible cupid's bow.
Same syringe of Juvederm. Different result depending on how the injector places it.
The Russian lip look — what it actually looks like
Think: - Taller top lip relative to bottom - Defined vermillion border (the edge of your lip) - Pronounced cupid's bow — the M-shape at the top center - Flatter front profile, not "pillow puff" projection - Distinct heart shape when viewed straight-on
Not for you if you want: - Rounder, plumper lips - Bigger overall projection - Softer, more natural enhancement without visible shape change
Who Russian lip technique suits
Ideal candidates: - Naturally flat cupid's bow — Russian technique creates it - Thin upper lip out of proportion to lower — evens the ratio - Clients who want visible, "editorial" lip enhancement - Younger clients (20s-30s) whose lips still have good shape but lack definition
Not ideal: - Clients wanting natural, "did they or didn't they" enhancement - Clients over 45+ (mature lips + Russian technique can look severe) - Clients with very thin lips who want major volume — traditional will get you more mL for the same visible result - First-time filler clients — Russian is more advanced, harder to reverse subtly
Injection technique specifics
Russian lip technique uses:
- Fine needle (30-32G) — not cannula
- Multiple small vertical injections from below the wet-dry line, pushing up
- Product placed in the top 1/3 of the lip — closer to skin, giving visible definition
- Higher precision required — poor technique = "sausage" appearance
Standard lip technique uses:
- Cannula or needle horizontally
- Product placed in the body of the lip
- Even distribution
- More forgiving with less-experienced injectors
Russian is technically harder. It matters who does it.
Downtime — Russian technique has more
Because injections are shallower and more numerous:
- More visible dot bruising — expect 3-8 dots for 1-2 days
- Longer swelling — 3-5 days vs 2-3 for traditional
- More initial "over-projection" — lips look bigger than final result for first 5-7 days
Book at least 2.5 weeks before major events, not 2 weeks like standard filler.

- Simulate the look with descriptive words (we don't use AI simulators — they oversell)
- Discuss what technique suits YOUR anatomy — sometimes traditional is objectively better, and she'll tell you
- Confirm your comfort with the look before beginning

Russian technique doesn't last longer or shorter than traditional. Juvederm behavior is the same:
- Visible for 12-18 months
- Peak look at 3-6 months (post-swelling, before slow dissolution)
- Slow softening 6-12 months
- Time to rebook: 9-15 months typical
Reversal — same options
If you don't love the look:
- Dissolver (Hyaluronidase): Available at Alesca for $250. Breaks down the HA filler within 24-48 hours. Reversible entirely.
- Wait it out: Juvederm naturally dissolves over 12-18 months.
Russian technique is fully reversible like any HA filler.
Common mistakes to avoid
Chasing extreme height: Some clients ask for maximum vertical projection — the "trout pout" look. Morgan won't do this. Beyond a certain point it looks structural, not enhanced.
Doing Russian without seeing a portfolio: Ask any injector to show you their Russian lip before/afters on similar face shapes. Russian technique is unforgiving of poor execution.
Rushing to add more: If day 5 you think you want MORE height, wait until the 2-week follow-up. Most clients realize they're happy with the final look after swelling resolves.
